- Whisk together cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of the milk to form a thickener. Combine thickener and remaining milk in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Whisk together constantly as mixture heats and bring to just before a boil, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Pour hot milk over chopped chocolate in a large ceramic or glass bowl. Let stand 1 minute, then stir until smooth. Serve with optional toppings, if desired.
