With good diabetes management, you can lead a full, active life. Focus on these healthy strategies.

Check your blood sugar
Ask your doctor to show you how, when it’s best to check, and what to do if your blood sugar is too high or low.

Take your medication
You’ll get the most benefit if you follow your doctor’s instructions. Also, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including any supplements.

Eat more fruits, veggies, and whole grains
Healthy eating is especially important for steady blood sugar. Look for naturally delicious, wholesome foods, like no-salt-added beans, leafy greens, salmon, and whole wheat pasta.

Stay as active as you can
Regular physical activity is important for overall health. Talk to your doctor about how to exercise safely. Do a mix of cardiovascular exercise (walking, dancing, biking) and strengthening exercise (lifting light weights, using resistance bands).

Get the checkups you need
Your doctor can make sure your diabetes treatment plan is working. Ask your doctor how often you should come back for checkups. Plus, to lower your risk for diabetes complications, see your dentist every six months and your eye doctor every one to two years.
